What requirements are there for teaching abroad?

Although every country has its regulations and requirements when it comes to teaching, here are some of the major requirements you will need to start your teaching position abroad.

Bachelors Degree

Most schools you will encounter on your journey to find a teaching position abroad will require at least a bachelor’s degree from a certified institution. However, your major or degree may not matter, especially in teaching English.   Online degrees may or may not be accepted depending on the country you are looking to go to. Please research to see if your degree is obtained.
In Taiwan, you are legally allowed to teach with an associate and a TEFL certification; however, most schools do require a bachelor’s at least.

English Comprehension

For English teaching roles, most require you to be a native speaker. But what does being a “native speaker” mean? Typically for schools, it means being from a nation where people have spoken English from early childhood. The native speaker versus non-native speaker is a tricky subject that I have written more about here:

Other roles for subjects like physics, mathematics, or others may not require being a native speaker but probably will need a C2 level.

Teaching Experience

Simply put, some positions require teaching experience; others do not. Typically public schools, international schools, and bilingual schools will require some experience. Cram schools are usually more open to inexperienced teachers and offer comprehensive training. There are other ways to gain experience without seeing a classroom. This includes tutoring, babysitting, coaching, and many others. Check out this article to learn how you can gain teaching experience without stepping foot into a classroom.

How to improve my chances?

No matter where you plan on applying, a strong resume can only approve your chances of getting a callback. However, simple edits like no grammatical or spelling mistakes, only having one to two pages, and a clean format can go a long way in getting you that dream position. Also, certifications like the TEFL and TESOL that can be easily obtained will significantly improve your chances of getting that teaching position.
